SUMMARY:Keeping Our Hearts Open - Communal Grief Retreat for All Types of Grief
DESCRIPTION:Friday April 24th 5:30pm-9pm \nSaturday April 25th 9am – 9pm(ish) \nSunday April 26th 9am – 5pm \nWe carry grief of all kinds. Joy and sorrow are a main staple of our daily life\, and we are not meant to carry our suffering in isolation. Come join us for a time of cathartic release and deep connection\, to end our cultural norm of isolation. \nThe ancient wisdom of this grief tending lineage teaches us that our culture is sick not because we grieve too much\, but because we don’t grieve enough. We aren’t given permission to fully grieve. \nWhen grief is not processed\, it often gets passed down through the generations and can come out in harmful ways. But we can choose differently.  We can reclaim our natural ability to heal alongside one another. \nGrief is not something to get over but to be embraced and cherished for the love that it is. It is ok to hurt\, we just need each other to collectively hold that hurt and support one another to carry what we cannot carry alone. Sometimes we can get stagnate and drown in our grief because we aren’t given a way and a community to allow it to move through us. \nThis medicine helps us regain our interconnectivity. This being human is no easy task and part of our challenge in life is learning to be more human. To celebrate the full range of our human experience and that means our deep sorrow. But touching on that agony is often scary and why we need companions to journey with us through the tunnel of grief until we come out the other side. \nThe ritual includes talking circles\, singing and drumming\, poetry\, movement\, practice in sacred listening\, witnessing and being witnessed\, ceremony\, sharing food and quiet time. The heart of the retreat is a ceremony inspired by Sobonfu Somé and shared by Laurence Cole and Harmony Woods Grief Tenders. \n\n\n\nThe work is also inspired by the Five Gates of Grief from Francis Weller: \n\nEverything we love we will lose\,\nthe places that have not known love\,\nthe sorrows of the world\,\nthe things we cannot even name that we ache for\, and\nintergenerational or ancestral grief.\n\n$350 for the weekend (food not included). We try to keep the cost of these rituals as low as possible\, so if you are able\, please consider making a donation towards a scholarship fund to support someone else to attend. Thank you! \nIf you are registering\, you can venmo your payment to @harmonywoods for $350 or send a check for $350 and we will reserve your spot! \nPayment plans\, scholarships\, and work trades are available upon request. Email Harmonywoodsretreats@gmail.com to request one.  We are dedicated to making this accessible to everyone so please don’t hesitate to ask! No one will be turned away. \nCheck out our work trade options here!\n  \n\nRegister Here

DESCRIPTION:Join Ajahn Nisabho and Ayyā Ahiṃsā for a day of meditation and teachings\, 9 am – 5 pm on Saturday\, July 5th \nThe Buddha encouraged us to brighten the mind through meditating on the four Divine Abodes (brahmavihāras) of loving-kindness (mettā)\, compassion (karuṇā)\, empathetic joy (muditā)\, and equanimity (upekkhā). By focusing on the two supplementary qualities of compassion—the heart’s response to others’ suffering—and empathetic joy—its response to others’ happiness\, we broaden our capacity to meet all circumstances\, internal and external\, with love. \nFeel free to contact Mary Webster with any questions at marylaya1@comcast.net. May all beings be well! \nSchedule\n9 – 10 am: Brief welcome\, introduction\, & guided meditation.\n10 – 10:30 am: Dhamma talk\n10:30 – 11:30 am: Sitting & walking meditation\n11:30 am – 12:30 pm: Sack lunch\n12:30 – 1 pm: Rest/ free time\n1 – 2 pm: Guided meditation and Q&A\n2 – 3:30: Walking & sitting meditation (and individual interviews)\n3:30 – 4 pm: Dhamma Talk\n4 – 4:30 pm: Walking & sitting meditation (and individual interviews)\n4:30 – 5 pm: Closing comments\, and spreading blessings\n5 – 6 pm: Informal Teatime\, clean-up\, and general hobnobbing with old and new friends! \nMeal (Individual sack lunch)\nTo keep the event simple\, the retreat will not feature a potluck this year. Such contributions help support future offerings and the growth of Dhamma. \nBiographies\nAjahn Nisabho\nAfter finishing college in 2012\, Ajahn Nisabho left his native Washington to go forth as a Buddhist monk in Thailand. He received full ordination the following spring under Ajahn Anan\, a senior disciple of renowned meditation master\, Ajahn Chah\, and spent the following years training in forest monasteries around the world with contemporary masters such as Ajahn Anan\, Ajahn Pasanno\, and Ajahn Jayasaro. Over these years\, he came to believe the tradition represented a faithful embodiment of the original Buddhist path able to yield great fruit even amidst the complexities of modern life. In the summer of 2021\, he returned to Seattle to plant the first seeds of Clear Mountain Monastery. \nAyyā Ahiṃsā\nAyyā Ahiṃsā took Anagarika Precepts in January 2012 and then Samaneri Precepts in 2013 with Ayya Medhanandi at Sati Saraniya Hermitage. In 2016 she joined the nuns’ community at Aloka Vihara and was given Bhikkhuni Ordination in 2017 with Ayya Gunasari Theri as her preceptor. Since 2022 Ayya Ahimsa has had Beth Upton as her meditation teacher. Find more about her offerings at Canmore Theravada Buddhist Monastery

SUMMARY:On Healing Ground - Communal Grief Ritual
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this powerful communal grief retreat. \nSaturday 9am – 9pm \nSunday 9am – 5pm \nWe carry grief of all kinds. Joy and sorrow are a main staple of our daily life. And this ancient wisdom teaches us that our culture is sick not because we grieve too much\, but because we don’t grieve enough. We aren’t given permission to fully grieve. \nMany of us feel alone and isolated in our grief.  Western cultures tend to have a “don’t ask for help” and a “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mentality. It is forced down and shamed until it turns into a personal pathology rather than collectively held and honored. We are not meant to grieve alone! The heart of the retreat is a ceremony inspired by Sobonfu Somé and shared by Pacific Healing Circles. \n\n\n\nThe work is also inspired by the Five Gates of Grief from Francis Weller: \n\nEverything we love we will lose\,\nthe places that have not known love\,\nthe sorrows of the world\,\nthe things we cannot even name that we ache for\, and\nintergenerational or ancestral grief.\n\n$300 for the weekend (food not included). We try to keep the cost of these rituals as low as possible\, so if you are able\, please consider making a donation towards a scholarship fund to support someone else to attend. Thank you! \n Payment plans\, scholarships\, and work trades are available upon request. \n\n\nGrief Retreat October 5-6\, 2024 \n$300.00 – $350.00 \nBuy now \n\n\n\n\nFacilitators: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaurence Cole is a well-known song leader and respected elder with long involvement in grief work\, men’s work\, and many other aspects of healing and enlivening the human spirit. He has been co-facilitating Grief Retreats since 2009 and was blessed to have experienced this ritual with Sobonfu Some. In addition\, he has been offering a ritual called “Grief Song\,” at singing events for the past 7 years. \nKirsten Angell \n \nAfter working in the fields of conservation\, urban planning\, sustainability and socio-political activism\, Kirsten eventually hit a wall of despair. The desire to be present for the raising up of her three children\, and now a grandchild\, in a world that appears to be unraveling\, forced her to look outside of the usual therapeutic practices to heal and reconnect with her purpose. \nHer practice is to support others in their healing by combining group work and the healing modalities that she has found helpful in her own journey. She has studied the art of grief tending with Therese Chauvet and Laurence Cole\, ancestral healing practices and the reclamation of animistic perspectives with Daniel Foor\, Joanna Macy’s Work That Reconnects\, as well as multiple other modalities with teachers that have given her a sense of renewed perspective\, purpose and resilience in the face of whatever may come. A true proponent of The Great Turning\, Kirsten is humbly and continually working towards developing her own level of awareness and is actively supporting the collective shift away from the colonialist and separationist mindset and into a deeper\, more reciprocal relationship to Life and Love. \n \nChristi Ortiz is a licensed therapist\, spiritual director\, author\, and founder of Harmony Woods Retreat Center.  She has been providing grief support individually and in groups for the past 18 years. She sees these grief rituals as one of the most powerful ways for people to come together to help one another hold what is too hard to hold alone\, to help heal and release\, and to gain greater resiliency to live an open-hearted life. She is also passionate about making these healing retreats more accessible to all people!

SUMMARY:Rapture\, Reality\, & the Joyful Heart : Ajahn Nisabho
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of meditation and learning with the inspirational Ajahn Nisabho. Register here: https://square.link/u/afudGQ98 \nThe Buddha repeatedly advised us to cultivate joy as a support for a strong practice\, happy heart\, and lucid awareness. Despite this\, modern practitioners often find their meditations dry\, let down by narrow techniques that fail to interest their active minds. By cultivating breath and loving-kindness meditation\, we brighten the mind so it can clearly see the reality of impermanence\, holding it all in alongside the joyful heart. \nIf you previously registered via the old Eventbrite page\, please register again with the link above. Feel free to contact Mary Webster with any questions at marylaya1@comcast.net. May all beings be well! \nBiographies\nAjahn Nisabho\nAfter finishing college in 2012\, Ajahn Nisabho left his native Washington to go forth as a Buddhist monk in Thailand. He received full ordination the following spring under Ajahn Anan\, a senior disciple of renowned meditation master\, Ajahn Chah\, and spent the following years training in forest monasteries throughout Thailand\, Australia\, and the US. While staying with some of the lineage’s most respected teachers\, he grew to believe the Thai Forest Tradition’s balance of communal life with solitary forest dwelling\, careful adherence to the monastic precepts\, and focus on meditation represented a faithful embodiment of the original Buddhist path. Moreover\, his time with contemporary masters such as Ajahn Anan\, Ajahn Pasanno\, and Ajahn Jayasaro\, convinced him that such a path could yield great fruit in the heart even amidst the complexities of modern life. He currently resides in Seattle as part of Clear Mountain Monastery’s aspiration. \nAll teachings are offered completely free of charge. However\, those who wish to contribute towards Clear Mountain may do so by visiting the Friends of Clear Mountain website. Such contributions help support future offerings and the growth of Dhamma. \n  \nThis retreat is being held in honor of Chris Nerison\, who passed away in late March of 2024. Chris\, a dear friend of many in the Sangha\, originally organized this retreat and not only spent years stewarding the Spokane Mindfulness Meditation community\, but was a dedicated supporter of Clear Mountain who practiced and gave with great faith in the Dhamma. He will be remembered with love. May his passage be one of grace.

SUMMARY:Making Space for Listening Within
DESCRIPTION:A Day Apart – Saturday April 27\, 2024 \nA Space for Listening Within \nPlease join us for a day away from daily distractions. This will be a supportive and regenerative space where you can slow down\, take time to rest\, and listen to the subtleties that we all miss in this fast-paced world. \nCome listen to the wisdom found in your own body\, soul\, and in nature through time-tested practices that help foster this connection. Connecting with ourselves in this way allows deep wisdom to come through\, revealing answers to questions we may not have even asked yet. This will be a time to unwind\, untie the knots caused simply by existing\, and begin to hear your deeper self. It’s a chance to forge a new relationship with the most important person in your world…. You. \nTai Chi & Qigong – presented by Christine Schmidt. Christine has always been drawn to the relationship between our mind and body. The gently flowing movements and coordinated breath of Tai Chi and Qigong give purpose to our body\, and bring ease to our mind. \nGuided Meditative Drum Journey – presented by Jenn Evans. To Jenn\, the sound of a drum is the shared heartbeat connecting all things. Listening to drumming works magic in our brains. It synchronizes the logical left hemisphere\, the creative right hemisphere\, the non-verbal areas\, and the frontal cortex (language & reasoning). This integration produces feelings of relaxation\, insight and certainty. \nHimalayan singing bowl sound bath – presented by Lynne Pulizzi. Lynne’s unique ability to seamlessly blend the sounds of the bowls takes the listener into a deep state of relaxation and tranquility\, enabling a higher state of awareness. \nMindful movement and dance – presented by Korrine Rothrock\, Korrine’s lifelong interest in the subtle exchange between humans and the natural world helps her deliver skillfully guided free-form movement and true dance workouts which support us in remembering our innate intuitive abilities. \nDress for comfort and movement. Bring whatever you need (blankets\, pillows\, mats\, camp chair) to be comfortable lying on the floor or sitting for extended periods (for meditative drum journey and sound bath). \n  \nThere will be some yoga mats\, bolsters\, and blankets available\, as well as chairs. \nIf weather allows\, Tai Chi and Qigong may be done outside. \nBring a notebook or journal to capture any insights. There will be free time built into the day for introspection and integration. You’re welcome to find a private nook on the Harmony Woods property\, or spend part of that time at the nearby James T. Slavin Conservation Area to take in the serenity of its 600+ acres of wetlands\, meadows\, and forests. \nPlease bring your own water bottle\, lunch\, and snacks. There will be full kitchen access with a fridge\, stove\, microwave\, dishes\, and utensils available for use. \nThere will also be a coffee and tea station available all day. \n$111.00 \nFor questions or to register\, please email Jenn Evans – jennliming@gmail.com \n \n

SUMMARY:On Healing Ground - Harmony Woods Communal Grief Retreat
The heart of the retreat is a ceremony inspired by Sobonfu Some and shared by Pacific Healing Circles. \n\n\n\nThe work is also inspired by the Five Gates of Grief from Francis Weller: \n\nEverything we love we will lose\,\nthe places that have not known love\,\nthe sorrows of the world\,\nthe things we cannot even name that we ache for\, and\nintergenerational or ancestral grief.\n\n$300 for the weekend (food not included) \n Payment plans\, scholarships\, and work trades are available upon request. \nQuestions or to be added to the waitlist: Please email harmonywoodsretreat@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFacilitator: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaurence Cole is a well-known song leader and respected elder with long involvement in grief work\, men’s work\, and many other aspects of healing and enlivening the human spirit. He has been co-facilitating Grief Retreats since 2009 and was blessed to have experienced this ritual with Sobonfu Some. In addition\, he has been offering a ritual called “Grief Song\,” at singing events for the past 7 years. \nAssisted by Kirsten Angell  and Christi Ortiz \n \nAfter working in the fields of conservation\, urban planning\, sustainability and socio-political activism\, Kirsten eventually hit a wall of despair. She understands that all people hold grief of some kind\, and she has seen these grief retreats be one of the most powerful healing experiences for people even if they have done extensive grief work or therapy in the past. She is passionate about making these healing retreats more accessible to all people!

SUMMARY:Mappa Divina Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Come join Heather Berndt for an afternoon of exploring the divine at Harmony Woods! \nWhere are you on the path with the divine? Is there a threshold place calling to your soul? Mappa\nDivina is a sacred visioning process rooted in the contemplative practices of map making and creative\ndiscernment. It involves writing\, collage\, and prayer intended to promote communion with spirit and\nalignment with Godde’s highest good for your life. The process is like creating a vision board but dives\ndeeper into your inner landscape and is oriented toward being and doing rather than having. At the end\nof the retreat\, participants will have a set of words and images to guide them on their journey forward.\nBest of all\, it’s fun!\nMappa Divina is grounded in:\n the human experience through a lens of divine mystery.\n an assumption of wholeness with an invitation to expanding and deepening.\n an orientation towards freedom\, authenticity\, and the gift of embodied wisdom.\n inspired action through exploratory writing\, collage art\, and contemplative prayer.\nNo special skills needed\, and all supplies provided. The only requirement is open hands and hearts. \nMax Participants: 12 (make sure to sign up before spots get filled!) \nTo register email: hello@heatherberndt.com \nOR \nClick the following link: \nhttps://checkout.square.site/merchant/MLHQ8E5K3TRJ0/checkout/RRIE4WCW2XSUTWFAGEEKO3S3

SUMMARY:Writing to Wisdom\, Writing to Wonder: A Weekend Memoir Workshop
DESCRIPTION: Saturday\, July 29 & Sunday July 30\, Harmony Woods\, 10am to 4pm. \n  \n“We are are…on our own individual\, lonely\, heroic journey to discover who we are\, where we are\, and what our relationship is to this body\, this life\, and this mystery in which we find ourselves.” \nPat Schneider\, How the Light Gets In \n  \nJust as our hearts want to cultivate wisdom\, our writing selves aim to speak what matters most. Ironically\, words can lead us to silence\, a greater listening to the dignity of our whole selves and a brave leaping into the unknown. In that listening and receptivity\, we write until we surprise ourselves and honor what comes forth. Accessing a different part of our brain than our daily tasks\, writing can be a rich arena to explore insight\, reflection\, and the cultivation of wisdom. \nAutobiography and memoir are different creatures: autobiography is the story of a life (the rich and famous get to write them); memoir is a story from a life\, a major theme from the journey. There is much to celebrate in a life’s journey\, and there is also inevitable loss. \nOur forum will be a place for the intimacy of both kinds of stories—the joys and the wounds—respecting the privacy of individuals while supporting one another. \n  \nTogether\, we’ll: \n* Use various methods to bring forth a multitude of ideas\, themes\, and stories from your life and history to mine for writing for this class and in the future. \n*Listen and leap! Writing is an act of discovery\, not repetition. \n*Discern—separating the gems from the noise. Writing reveals the struggle between the personal and the universal. \n*Crafting our words to make them meaningfully connect to others. \n  \nAbout Sarah \nWith a BA in religious studies and an MFA in poetry\, Sarah’s words have been published in various literary journals and anthologies; she is the author of six books on world wisdom traditions published by Skinner House Press; and she has written feature articles for Tricycle Magazine (“When my Son Became a Monk\,” “Lost at Sea\,” and “Minefulness: A Case Study.” Her forthcoming memoir\, Set Adrift: My Family’s Disappearance in the Bermuda Triangle\, will be released in June of 2023 by 55 Fathoms Press. Along with reading\, writing\, meditating\, and being sporty outdoors\, Sarah’s favorite activity is to guide writers towards making their words matter—both to themselves and to others. \n \nWhat You’ll Need: \nIt takes honesty and courage to try and wrestle the truth of experience onto the page. Please bring a writing pad and pen\, and\, if you have one\, a laptop computer is helpful. \nPlease bring a pot-luck lunch item to share. In your consideration of what to bring\, be aware that we may be with some people who are vegetarians and/or are gluten-free. \nPS: The discipline of writing requires momentum\, and a writing community is the best way to spur each other on. Maybe\, just maybe\, there’ll be a writing group birthed from our time together. \nLIMIT of 15 participants   $100 for the weekend \n  \n\n\nWriting to Wisdom\, Writing to Wonder: A Weekend Memoir Workshop \n$100.00 \nBuy now \n\n\n
